May as well talk about games while I'm here, so recently I've been getting into more niche YN fangames and my favourite so far has been Yuque (second picrel), I'm only halfway but it has the same feeling as playing YN for the first time while being very distinct. Some of the environments make me very emotional for some reason, really a stellar experience so far. I'm pretty sure this is one of those fangames that have suspended development so have no ending which is a bummer but I'm happy with what's there. Highly recommend.

I switched to using RetroArch for emulation because the initial premise is a really good idea. A single program that loads "cores" to emulate different consoles instead of using multiple emulator programs. However it has some serious issues and the biggest issue for me is the way it handles controllers. If RetroArch recognises what controller you're using it's great. Plug the controller into a USB port and it just works. If it doesn't, manually configuring a controller is unnecessarily difficult. The settings are buried in the UI and even if you do manually configure a controller, it doesn't always work the next time you want to use it.

Some random thoughts on controllers.

Retro-bit USB SNES controller
Nice quality controller at a fair price. I use this when emulating the NES, SNES, GB, GBC and GBA. I didn't own a NES or a SNES back in the day so can't compare it to the original controllers.

Retro-bit USB MD and Saturn controllers.
Again, it's a nice quality controller for not a lot of money. I did own a MegaDrive and Saturn when I was growing up and these controllers are a faithful reproductions, the MD controller even rattles like the original. I use it for emulating 32X, MD, MCD, SMS, GG and Saturn. If you want just one controller for emulating 8-bit and 16-bit consoles, this is the controller I would recommend. It has enough buttons for almost any console from that era.

Retro-bit Tribute 64
This wasn't my first choice, I would have preferred a Brawler 64. In use it's been ok. The button layout works for the N64, it also makes for a decent controller for the Dreamcast and can work as a 3D Saturn pad. The position of the d-pad is odd but I haven't had any issues with it yet. The quality is ok for the price, it's about on par with the original.

Hori USB GCN controller
I really really like this controller. I did own a Gamecube and the Hori remake feels better than the original. The difference is especially noticeable in the trigger buttons and the d-pad.

Woah another nonnie who had a sega saturn. I loved Clockwork Knight so much when I was a kid.

I only emulate on my steamdeck, but I will keep this in mind if I ever want to hook a usb controller to it while it's in a dock. Excellent report, many thanks.
Replies: >>5762
>>5746
I forgot to mention the controller I use for PSX and PS2 emulation. I use a Logitech F310 and it's alright. I've never had any problems with it. Mine is around 10 years old and still works perfectly. I know people say these are bad but I think this is because Logitech has declined in quality over the years. It's layout is almost identical to an a Dual Shock so it works well for PS emulation. It also has a neat feature of being able to switch between DirectInput and XInput which means it works with older PC games.

>>5748
>Woah another nonnie who had a sega saturn.
I loved my Saturn and never understood why people said it was a bad console. It had some really good unique games like Nights into Dreams, Virtual On and Panzer Dragoon. I also loved playing racing games at the time and I spent hours with JRPGs like Shining Force III.

>I only emulate on my steamdeck, but I will keep this in mind if I ever want to hook a usb controller to it while it's in a dock.
Most of these controllers also have a wireless version that you might prefer if you're using a steamdeck. I use my desktop for emulation so I always prefer wired controllers. My computer is right next to me so it seems pointless and I don't have to deal with the added latency.
Replies: >>5793
>>5762
I loved Nights into Dreams and Panzer Dragoon! I never played Virtual On, though. I should.
I like wired controllers too for the same reasons. I have a wireless playstation something controller and it's annoying to constantly have to unpair it with the steam deck and pair it back.
Replies: >>5825
More thoughts on emulation. My desktop is powerful enough to emulate the PS3 and Xbox 360 so I've been playing around with that. Neither emulator is perfect and certain games require community made patches to run. It's only worth doing if you really want to play a console exclusive as a lot of the big games from that console generation have PC ports.

I've also been using dolphin to play The Urbz. It's a fun game. Although I can see why it didn't meet EA's sales expectation. It feels rough and unpolished with some questionable design choices. I think it would have been better as a PC game.

>>5793
Virtual On is weird one. It was given to me as a gift, I don't think it's a game I would have chosen on my own at the time. It's based on an arcade game that was rare outside of Japan and even today very few people have heard of it.

Praying that the new Tomodachi Life isn't complete shit. I wasted so much time on the first one and it's one of my favorite games ever. I am trying not to get too excited because current day Nintendo is such a terrible company with the way they handled Animal Crossing. I'll be crushed if they somehow fuck it up since my bar for the next Tomodachi game is kind of low. If they just expand whatever was in the the first game and actually allow Miis to have same-sex relationships (hated having to constantly keep my Miis based on gay celebrities single due to autism and refusal to troon out any of my Miis), I'm already going to be very happy.

I downloaded the old GTA III era games from the Internet Archive because I felt like replaying them and I didn't want the remake which is apparently terrible. Back in the day I remember the controls for guns not being very good on a controller so by using the PC versions I hoped I would be able to use a mouse but the PC version uses the exact same control as the console versions.

Something that I missed when I played these games over 20 years ago is how much violence against women there is. Looking at it with the perspective that I have now, it's almost shocking.

Watched "The Dressmaker" last night and I really enjoyed it. It definitely was not what I was expecting! I thought it would be more like a romcom, and it was at times, but it was also a revenge film! I think it would probably be quite popular in the moovie room too!
>>6323
I remember detective programmes being very popular at the time. All of them usually featured a lot of gore and pushed the limits of what was permissible on television. At that time entertainment media just seemed to have been dark and edgy with the victims of violence being women. Looking back I'm wondering if it was just a general trend or if there was something more sinister behind it.

I've been playing tons of heartopia. I would add nonas but I play with my irl sisters... the game is fun, the Twitter uproar over ai and stuff is really unwarranted. I definitely get that. The one big upside to Heartopia is you can't really endlessly level. You can collect things, but you won't level up by grinding. I've been playing a bunch of Batman games lately, so it's a mix of platformers, action-adventure and fighting games, but I'm ready to move on to something else for a while. I'll be playing Bioshock 2 for my next game, and I'm really excited about it. Other than that, I've been building up interest in Prey with the Mooncrash DLC for the future. I enjoy the puzzle aspect of a changing, deteriorating environment that you have to get through with variety of characters, and having to consider everyone's strengths and weaknesses instead of playing with one min maxed character. I recently found a stealth indie with a similar gimmick, and I'm really curious about it. It's called 'The Stone of Madness'. You have a bunch of characters with different abilities, and they work together to escape a monastery prison. What kind of games most interest you?

Nyart, but I decided to start playing Hogwarts Legacy recently and I am so obsessed with it! I feel a bit weird since I've obviously started playing years after the hype has died down at this point, but surprisingly there is a fan community that seems pretty chill where people just draw their OCs hanging out with the NPCs and going on adventures. I was so excited to learn that a sequel will be made, but now I am hearing rumors it won't be in the same time period with the same characters unfortunately. The "Stone of Madness" sounds interesting to me because I love the idea of the characters having different strengths. I remember back in the day, cartoon network had a Teen Titans flash game on their website where you could switch between the characters and use their various powers to overcome obstacles, but the game was a bit too easy in that nearly every obstacle could be overcome playing just as Raven for the most part due to her telekinesis.

I played Hogwarts Legacy a fair amount of time after the hype too. It was a nice game, though my stupid habits ruined it for me near the end when I tried to clear the map or all puzzles and collectibles.
