i got myself a rusted blade
and by blade i mean a bare butt ass naked blade
no hilt, no sheath
the only thing covering it is a layer of rust (very erotic)
i plan to restore it
polishing it will prolly solve the rust then ill have to work on making a hilt
i have a bone that i can use
i forgot where i found it
i think it was from someone's food
i bet it will be hella cool to have a bone hilt
tho ill prolly fuck it up since i have never made one before
the bone already has a hole going through it, so it should be simple enough to expand it with a drill until the bottom fits through
the real challenge will be to make it a straight hole
but its ok, if that fails i can always fall back on one of the dozens of unsorted pieces of wood i have lying around
but id need to use the table saw of someone's workshop bc i have never been able to saw parallel lines before
if i cant managed even that, then ig ill just weave a hilt with yarn over some pieces of cardboard, that looks like it will work out just fine in my head (im a shape rotator, see)
sharpening is the easiest part, i already have a stone just for that
it will just take 3 hours to do by hand since the edge is completely blunt
but ill leave it for last bc i dont want it to be sharp while im still applying other forms of medieval torture to it
before that ill have to also make a sheath
normally they are made of leather, but from what i gather, leatherworking is a much bigger pain in the ass than sewing
still, i should be able to find sth made of leather if i rumage through enough ppl's trash
hopelly it will be a piece long enough for the blade (it can prolly be classified as a short sword, but no, its not a machete, it doesnt have that gay curve at the tip)
i dont have an awl, but im sure i can poke holes on the leather with a hammer and a small nail and then sew it normally
maybe with a triple thread for extra sturdiness
if i cant then ig ill just make one out of several layers of fabric with a spine made of popsicle sticks so it doesnt end up floppy

all this is basically the job of finishing a blade, so if it goes well, ill try to forge one from scratch next
easy peasy should be done before the weekend

got the blade polished
it is still severely stained by the rust, but there is no fixing it without grinding the whole thing down which would make it thinner and possibly damage it
still, the metal feels smooth enough now, so i might just paint it over later
or just leave it as is and call it freckled
btw i found the perfect piece of wood for the handle, and already made the design
i only sawed the wood so far, im gonna finish it tomorrow ig
use an angle grinder to get it in the proper shape
idk where to buy pins and rivets, so ill just attach it with glue instead
just gotta figure out which glue to buy
i see lots of ppl using epoxy, so ill see what the hype is all about
and ig thats basically all thats left
gonna also use the angle grinder to sharpen it when its done
oh yea there is still the matter of the sheath
i still havent secured a leather source, but ill keep looking

no new updates bc i didnt do anything bc ive been sick for the past 2 days
i was wearing a mask and goggles while working to avoid inhaling rust precisely to prevent this shit
but i just remembered i havent changed the mask's filters in over a year

hiltmaking is back on the menu
im still not 100%, but im enough% that i started working on the knife again
i sawed the design i drew, used a grinder to get in a finer shape, then glued to the blade with epoxy
yea i aint pinning this bitch
there is still a gap since i just sandwiched the metal between the wood
i think ill fill it with some sort of resin
if that fails ig ill try to drip candle wax on it lmao
i oiled the blade bc i think it started rusting again
the catch is that i used the oil meant for my bike chain
better than the kitchen oil i tried at first before i realize it might not be osha-compliant
btw i found a pair a leather shoes that are about the right size for cutting and turning into a sheath, so lets see how well that goes

ok hilt done
i couldnt find a resin, so i just used the jar of wood dust i had been keeping for the past 2 years bc i knew some day itd be useful
(it is still 90% full)
i made several layers of glue + dust until everything was filled
then sanded it to make it all smooth
now it feels good to brandish the blade
i applied a coat of paint and now its looking p good
tomorrow ill finally sharpen it then figure out leatherworking
i might even make a training stand by tying a stick with a bunch of wet newspapers like i learned in cdda

also i started practicing welding again bc ill prolly need to make my own hammer when i start forging
i found a thick lump of steel that might be usable as an anvil
but its hollow so idk if it will be able to withstand the [HAND OF JEFF] at full force

i ended up making the sheath out of a torn tire i found
i got my hands on proper leather sheets afterwards, but i cant really be arsed to do a proper sheath now that i have one that is 'good enough'

my next project is gonna be to go on a hobo grindset and collect a bunch of aluminum cans and melt them to make goggles
idk how sandcasting works, but cant be too hard if illiterate redsmiths had it figured out 4000 years ago
