You should totally buy chickens. I love chickens so much, they're behind humanity's advancements and are lovely lovely creatures. They're so fluffy and female chickens are so sweet. It makes me so angry when the egg and poultry industry keeps them in small cages, I wish all chicken abusers die violently and burn in hell forever.

not her, but i don't think i could handle it. my grandparent used to raise chickens in their backyard. it always broke my heart when i came to visit only to find that one of the hens i had bonded with became dinner. i get attached way too easily ToT

no, i mean that my grandparents raised the chickens both for eggs and for meat, they were literally eating my friends. maybe that's why i became vegan.

You can raise them just for eggs! My last flock was just for eggs. I had cream leghorns and they laid blue eggs, so cute. I really miss my old flock but I couldn't figure out how to move them to the new house. So I sold them to my neighbor. >>696 you are so right and I should get chickens. I really liked my old rooster too, he was a huge coward and terrified of me but he was sweet to his hands. He was always clucking them over to treats and stuff and never treated them meanly.

I started keeping chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys with the intention of using them for meat and eggs. I couldn't bring myself to kill any of them so now it's just eggs.

They lay an egg a day. Which sounds like a lot until you realize they’re like 1/3rd the size of chicken eggs… But still, they’re just so funny. Even the rooster and his silly “crows”. Birds are cute.

Yeah I could never personally kill any of the poultry that my family raises. My mom and dad are usually responsible for taking care of that, and I'm very thankfully that they do the gross stuff because I could never kek.
It is really nice having your own meat to eat though because you know everything that went into raising it, so you don't have to speculate about what their living conditions were like or what they were eating before they died. My family also raises pigs and cows, but those are sent off to slaughter houses because they're way too big to care care of ourselves. I've had to learn not to get too attached to any of our animals though. When my family first started raising livestock when I was maybe 10 or so I ended up really loving our pigs, so when they had to go away I cried a lot. I still miss Wilbur a bit, she was my favorite pig...

I have too many roosters and that can be bad for the hens (because they get overbred and it's stressful for them) so I've been telling myself I can do the roosters at least.

Yeah roosters can be total assholes as well, so I probably would have less reservations about killing them compared to hens. I say this, but I still would still get too squeamish about the whole thing to ever go through with actually killing them kek. Maybe you could ask someone to help you out with the process if you are gonna do it at some point? I feel like once the heads are off and it's put in hot water to scald for a bit, it's a lot less disturbing to see the dead chicken, so if you get someone else to do those beginning steps it might be more tolerable to handle the rest.

That's a good idea. I could even sell them as meat birds. I was thinking about selling hatched out chicks since a lot of people don't want to go through incubating them. I kinda enjoyed that.
