I think this is a worthwhile discussion to have, in order to gauge how okay people are with this.
My opinion is that it's really hard to curb personalityfagging in any thread that acts as a general thread. LC is out of the ordinary because technically every thread is an archived general which makes not personalityfagging an actual effort, but it is clearly against the rules and they're actually enforced.
4chan is a whole other story and it's what I grew up with. Tripfags were hated, but they always had their little audience of simps that encouraged them. Depending on the board they'd have their own circlejerk threads. Tripfags could bring some entertaining drama to the boards too, if anyone remembers the early /r9k/ days after the board reopened, it could get milky.
Avatarfagging was the lesser evil, but most people didn't enjoy seeing the same reaction images from an x character in an unrelated thread, in my opinion it came across as that user pissing on a lamp post like a dog to mark their territory, it lacks decorum because we're in an anonymous space. There's no post history on 4chan, so avatarfagging acts as an antithesis to that. I would say there's exceptions to that, similar to the discussion the bronyfag was having here, it was a reply chain sticking to one topic for the most part, but if it became a constant thing in numerous threads and each time it boiled down to "hey bronyfag tell us about yourself" it would get insufferable.
However, the one exception where I rarely saw any pushback on inside the threads themselves was personalityfagging in generals, and I think it's because people understood it's nigh impossible to avoid if there's no rules that discourage it. If anyone hung out on any /vg/ general they'd probably know each thread consists of personalityfags circlejerking and drama vagueposting to oblivion if there's no game content to discuss and especially if the game is some kind of a social mmo you can erp in. The reason why I mentioned "inside the threads themselves" earlier was because a significant portion of 4chan's userbase hates generals for this very reason. At some points you'll have a dry season with nothing to talk about, which turns the threads into a chatroom.
The smallweb thread acts as a general in my opinion, and considering there's about 15 people regularly posting in it about their site and experiences, it's going to be inevitable they all become recognizable with time, especially if they become more open about what exactly they're doing with their sites besides being vague. I don't think this should be discouraged if we want a different thread from the LC one, but only time can tell how obnoxious it'll get.
